For Business OwnersA link brings traffic in three ways: a direct click, a higher search ranking and a mention that people and AI remember. Each works at a different speed and is measured differently. We explain how to aim link building at traffic, what to expect after 30, 90 and 180 days and how to calculate the result.
Link building increases traffic in three ways: a reader clicks the link, the search engine lifts the page and people (and language models) remember the brand. Each way has its own pace and its own place where you measure it. Whoever expects visits right after publication is usually disappointed. Whoever measures only direct clicks misses the main effect. This text describes how to set up link building so that traffic really grows – and how to tell that it does.
1. Direct click. A reader finishes an article on another website and clicks the link. It is the fastest effect (days to weeks), but with an ordinary publication it is small. It depends on the medium’s readership, on where in the text the link sits and on whether anything encourages the reader to click. Treat it as a bonus, not a goal.
2. Higher search ranking. A link from a trustworthy site strengthens the page it points to. It shows slowly, typically within three to six months, and only where the page has something to compete with. This is the way that brings most of the long-term traffic. The basics are covered in the article on what backlinks are and why they matter.
3. Brand mention. Someone who sees you in a medium next to a topic they care about will search for your name next time. That is traffic through branded queries – indirect, but high quality, because the person already knows who they are looking for. Brands get into AI answers in a similar way; see PR articles and mentions for AI visibility.
The most common mistake is pointing all links at the homepage. Traffic is brought to a specific page that answers the given query. Good rules for choosing:
For traffic the same rule applies as for trust: choose media your customers read, not the one with the cheapest link. A link from a niche site with live readers brings clicks and rankings. A link from a site with no readers brings nothing and, on risky domains, can do harm. Two or three quality publications aimed at one page beat ten cheap ones scattered across the site. Why quality beats quantity is discussed in the article on link building in the AI era.
No supplier can promise a specific position. Whoever promises one shows that they do not control someone else’s algorithm and are selling confidence instead.
A link brings traffic through direct clicks (fast, little), higher rankings (slowly, a lot) and a remembered brand (continuously). Aim it at one specific page just below the top of the results, publish in media your customers read and write down the starting point so that after three months you know what changed. The rest is patience.
