PR & LinkbuildingOver-optimized anchor text is one of the most common risks in link building. We show how to choose anchors so they look natural.
Anchor text is the visible text of a link – and at the same time one of the strongest signals about what the target page is about. That is exactly why it is also one of the most common places where link building goes wrong. When all links point to the same exact phrase, the profile looks artificial and you risk a penalty. Naturalness here is not aesthetics but safety.
There is no single “correct” number, but a simple rule applies: a natural profile is varied. Branded and generic anchors prevail, exact-match appears only occasionally. Do not try to “optimize” the profile into a single shape – the more artificial it looks, the more attention it draws, and not the kind you want.
The same anchor has a completely different value depending on where and how it is used. An exact-match link in the middle of a relevant, valuable article is natural; ten identical anchors in the footers of worthless sites are a warning signal. Search engines and models evaluate the surroundings of a link, not just its text.
Do not start from the anchor but from the content. When a natural, relevant text is created, the right anchor often suggests itself. The most valuable link is the one in quality content of a trustworthy medium – and there the anchor usually follows naturally from the sentence, not from a keyword table.
