For Business OwnersA PR article that supports marketing is not created while writing but while planning: goal, reader, topic, angle, sources and distribution. We describe eight steps from the brief to evaluation, how to get more outputs out of one article and what to check before sending it to the editorial team.
A PR article that supports marketing is not created while writing but while planning: first the goal and the reader, then the topic and the angle, and only then the text and distribution. This text takes you through eight steps from the brief to evaluation and shows how to get more than a link out of one publication. Writing that an editorial team accepts has its own article. Here the point is to make the article fit into marketing as a whole.
“We want to be visible” is not a goal. A goal is, for example: increase searches for the brand name, improve the ranking of one page for one query, get enquiries from a specific offer, get into AI answers for a few queries. Everything changes with the goal: the medium, the topic and the link. Write the goal down and return to it at evaluation.
You are not writing for “everyone” but for a person with a specific problem: who reads, what they already know about you and what they are dealing with. The topic comes from the question they ask. What people type into search and chat helps here too; see keywords vs. entities.
An editorial team rejects an advertising message and accepts a useful story. The angle is the reason the article should exist: your own data, a case study, an expert comment, a comparison, a new trend. The more it is “news for the reader” and the less “news for you”, the better. Examples media cite are described in your own study that media cite and the case study as a PR tool.
Choose the medium by where your reader is, not by price. Two to three widely read media in the field have more impact than ten cheap ones. How to choose is in the article on how to recognise a quality PR article and medium; where to look is described in six ways to choose media yourself.
Publication is the beginning. Besides the link and mention, you get proof for sales and material for your own channels: a social media post, a mention in the newsletter and a “They wrote about us” section on the website. This multiplies the value of one publication and extends its life.
After three to five months compare the state with step 1. Depending on the goal watch: rankings and impressions of the target page, referral visits, searches for the brand name and visibility in AI answers. Do not expect a result within a week; PR is not performance advertising. What sensible measurement looks like is in the article on measuring success: KPIs for SEO and AIEO.
A good PR article starts with the goal, the reader and an angle that an editorial team would run even without payment; writing is only the fifth step. It stands on facts, has one link to a specific page and is labelled as a commercial message. After publication it is used further and after three to five months evaluated against the goal you set at the start.
