Keywords vs. Entities: Semantic SEO

Search engines have long stopped working only with keywords and instead work with entities and their relationships. We explain what semantic SEO is and how to plan content around it.

The era when it was enough to pile the right keyword in exact wording into your text ended long ago. Modern search engines work with entities – people, brands, places, products, concepts – and above all with their mutual relationships. This approach is called semantic SEO and it is the basis of how Google and language models understand content today.

From word match to meaning

The search engine and the model do not want to find a page where the searched phrase happens to appear – they want to understand the topic and find the best answer. When you write about “link building”, you should naturally cover related entities: domain authority, digital PR, mentions, anchor text, source quality, disavow. Exactly this coverage signals that you really understand the topic, rather than just repeating one word.

Keywords have not disappeared

Careful – semantic SEO does not mean words do not matter. You still need to know how your customers search, what expressions they use and what intent lies behind the query. The difference is that a keyword is now an input to content planning, not its only goal. From a single expression you derive a whole topic along with subtopics.

How to plan content semantically

The benefit for AI visibility

Language models are built on knowledge graphs and relationships between entities. The more clearly your brand is defined as an entity – with a consistent name, description, field and mentions – the more reliably the model “remembers” you and uses you across related queries. An inconsistent identity, on the contrary, confuses models and dilutes your visibility.
