AIEOWhy in-depth coverage of a topic beats individual articles. How to build content hubs that search engines and AI trust.
Topical authority means being recognized as an authority on a certain topic – not thanks to one great article, but thanks to covering the topic in depth and from all angles. Search engines and language models today clearly prefer such sites: they would rather cite a source that demonstrably understands the topic than one that wrote about it once.
A content hub is a way to build topical authority in a structured manner. A pillar page (the hub) covers the topic broadly and links to detailed articles (satellites) that develop the individual subtopics. The satellites link back to the pillar and to each other. A connected structure emerges in which it is clear what belongs to what – and which a model can easily understand and traverse.
Beware of the opposite extreme: a hub is not about churning out fifty thin articles for the count. Ten genuinely useful texts do more for authority than fifty empty ones. Breadth of coverage must go hand in hand with depth – otherwise you build only volume, not authority.
Comprehensive coverage of a topic significantly increases the chance that AI perceives you as a trustworthy source and cites you across related queries – not just one. A model that repeatedly encounters your brand within a topic in connected, quality content will “associate” you with that topic. And that is exactly the point.
