Citation studies show AI assistants most often pull answers from communities, reviews and comparisons: up to a fifth of Perplexity citations come from Reddit, ChatGPT loves Wikipedia and AI Overviews favour YouTube. What that means for your brand visibility.
Analyses of hundreds of millions of AI answers from 2025–2026 brought an interesting finding: for their recommendations, models most often reach into communities, reviews and rankings – the places where third parties talk about brands, not the brands themselves. Whoever wants to appear in AI answers has to understand where models draw from.
A language model solves the same problem as a cautious customer: whom to trust. A brand’s own website is biased by definition – everyone writes nicely about themselves. Reviews, discussions and independent comparisons are social proof for the model: when a brand keeps appearing in “best tools for…” rankings and in recommendations from real users, it is safer to recommend. Models simply copy the logic of human decision-making – at scale.
