While AIEO describes the whole approach, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is its practical part – the concrete techniques that increase the likelihood that a generative search engine (ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews) uses you as a source and mentions you in its answer. It is not magic or a one-off trick, but systematic work on three layers.

The three layers GEO stands on

The best results come from working on all three levels at once. When one is missing, the others can hardly make up for it.

What generative models value

Both practice and early GEO research point to a clear pattern: models prefer to take content with specific statistics, expert quotes and unambiguous wording. The sentence “we are one of the leading agencies” is not cited. The sentence “in 2025 we published 1,200 PR articles for 340 clients” is – it is specific and verifiable. The easier your statement is to lift out of context and use on its own, the greater the chance the model takes it.

A step-by-step practical procedure

  1. Collect the questions. Write out 20–30 questions your customers really ask – including comparative ones like “the best tool for…”.
  2. Answer directly. For each question give a short, precise answer in the very first sentence, and only then elaborate.
  3. Back it with data. Add numbers, examples and sources. Facts are what get cited.
  4. Get mentions. Make sure other trustworthy media write about your brand too. The more quality and consistent mentions, the higher the chance the model remembers you.

What to watch out for

GEO is not about the amount of text but its usability. A long article without a single quotable sentence will not help the model. And beware of consistency: if your brand description differs from site to site, the model receives contradictory signals. Unify how you talk about yourself – name, field, key facts – across your own website and external mentions. A single consistent story is remembered better than ten conflicting ones.
